English Version
"The critic inquires into the truth, whose living flame continues to burn over the heavy logs of what is past and the light ashes of what has been experienced." (W. Benjamin)
"It would hardly be much of an exaggeration to equate the modern conception of reason with that of critique.” Adorno’s thesis points to more than a remainderless identification of critique with reason. For a critique that can potentially also be turned against itself makes the emergence of its own terminology an indicator of the very questions that the concept of reason names. Thus alongside the process of the critical verification of knowledge is registered an everchanging but nevertheless constitutive ambivalence between differentiation and judgment, a process whose rhetoric must in each case be formulated anew, be it as promise for the future or as call for reevaluation.
Our thesis is that critique is a matter of precisely these tensions between reevaluation and (re)positioning. Given that its process cannot rely on the security of a meta-language, critique as a critique of critique is marked by the tension inherent to its own fluctuating terminology. This fluctuation has consequences for the concept of critique itself, insofar as critique’s discursive practice, in its very lack of a stable point of origin, at once confirms and refutes its own legitimacy. Indeed, was it not the primary characteristic of critique already, in its first disciplinary application — namely, philology —, its double significance, in the literal sense of restoration, but also in the sense of (value) judgment? On the level of the object of critique itself, such questions extend also to the legitimacy of the various disciplines (and disciplining). Whether it is a case of literary criticism, iconic criticism, ideology critique, social critique, art criticism, cultural criticism, critique of religion, or the critique of modernity, criticism always also reflects upon itself as discipline in relation to its objects of study, in the very selection of critical processes – epistemological, methodological, textual, genealogical – by which to approach these objects.
Our conference wishes to situate the concept of critique within its interdisciplinary setting, and to explore the various forms that it has taken, not only in European contexts but also on the other side of the Atlantic. Potential questions to be posed are: To what extent are the debates between Nouvelle Critique, New Criticism, Kritischer Theorie, and Crítica Cultural still relevant today? What kind of an understanding of critical thought do these various notions demonstrate, and which traditions do they call upon? How does critique reveal itself as both reflection on objects and object of reflection? What is the relation of critique to history and to historicity? What is its position in terms of authority and authorization? How is critique situated vis-à-vis cognition and perception? How does critique manage its (own) knowledge?
The goal of the conference is to examine and refine the critical potential of an old term that merits renewed negotiation.
